Digital & Maker Services Policy

The Champaign Public Library provides technological resources to help meet the informational, educational, and recreational needs of its patrons. This policy establishes how digital and maker services may be utilized. Digital and maker resources include, but are not limited to: 3D printing, laser cutting and printing, Cricut machines, and digital recording and editing.

I. Service Usage

  1. Priority printing will be given to Library programs and events.
  2. The Library reserves the right to refuse any print request, to set a time limit as to the maximum amount of time a print job may take, to limit the number of requests, and to delay or stop a project due to time or resource capabilities.

II. Limitations

The Library’s digital and maker resources are only available for lawful purposes, and cannot be used to create items that are:

  1. Prohibited by local, state, or federal law.
  2. Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or that pose a threat to the well-being of others.
  3. Sexual, lewd, or otherwise patently offensive to a reasonable person's sensibilities.
  4. Weapons, weapons parts, weapons accessories, weapons facsimiles, or any other objects that can reasonably be considered as weapons.
  5. In violation of another's intellectual property rights (i.e., content that is subject to copyright, patent, or trademark protection).
  6. Intended by any for-profit enterprise; for sale or for a commercial purpose. Such limitation shall not apply to any reasonable use of the Library's digital and maker resources by any non-profit or community organization.
  7. Likely to fail or print incorrectly or likely to cause damage to equipment.

III. Copyright

  1. U.S. Copyright Law (Title 17, U.S. Code) and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 prohibit the unauthorized reproduction or distribution of copyrighted material, except as permitted by the principle of “fair use.”
  2. The Library expressly disclaims any liability or responsibility resulting from reproduction or distribution of copyrighted content by any method in any format.
  3. Staff assistance with the use of Library equipment does not imply copyright permission. The user is responsible for copyright compliance and assumes any liability for copyright violation.
