Oscar-winner Ruth E. Carter, Costume Designer |
Wed., Mar. 20, at 7 pm | ENJOY A VIRTUAL VISIT with costume designer Ruth E. Carter as part of the Illinois Libraries Present series. As a two-time Oscar winner, she holds the honor of being the first Black person to win for Best Costume Design. She won her first Academy Award for the movie Black Panther and her second for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Ruth E. Carter’s ability to develop an authentic story through costume and character made her one of the most sought after and renowned costume designers today. Best known for turning the Black Panther superhero into an African king, she is the first Black woman to win multiple Academy Awards in any category. Carter is known for her research and diligence to the craft of costume design, specifically for her work on films such as Spike Lee’s Malcolm X, Steven Spielberg’s Amistad, and Ava DuVernay’s Selma. JOIN US at Tuesdays at Ten | Eclipse Magic for a four-week cosmic journey (3/12–4/2) with local astronomy experts Erik Johnson and David Leake to learn all about the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8. Meets at the Main Library on Tuesdays at 10 am.
Where will you be April 8?
Mark your calendar! Enjoy an out-of-this-world experience viewing the eclipse—including music, eclipse-themed crafts, and getting free safety glasses—at the all-ages Eclipse Celebration on Monday, April 8, from 1–2:30 pm. The NASA livestream will be on view inside. We will be able to see a partial eclipse when the moon casts a shadow over 97.9% of the sun. If you travel, totality will be visible to the south and east, as close as Effingham. Eclipse glasses will be available at the library starting April 1. |
