Writer's Workshop: Science Fiction & Fantasy

Creative workshop on fantasy and science fiction writing. We’ll look at some of the ways writers avoid the pitfalls of derivative writing to invent speculative worlds our own world has yet to see.

About the instructor:

John Rubins writes fiction and nonfiction. His prose has appeared in Seattle Weekly, The Ninth Letter, Blue Stem, The Southeast Review, and The American Journal of Print. His speculative fiction has appeared in Kelly Link’s magazine, Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet, as well as New Genre, Full Unit Hookup, Electric Velocipede, Surgery of Modern Warfare, and others. He attended the Sewanee Writers’ Conference as a scholar and has been teaching fiction writing at the University of Illinois for fifteen years where he has received the Liberal Arts and Sciences Teaching Award as well as the Campus Wide Teaching Award. John is also a bicycle mechanic and bike builder known locally for designing and building cargo bikes, including an automaton bicycle that draws pictures when pedaled.
