Duties: The County Assessment Office plays a critical role in the property tax cycle by providing statistical analysis of property assessment data for the Illinois Department of Revenue, Township Assessors and the Board of Review and maintaining a current record of billing names and addresses for over 68,000 parcels in Champaign County.
The County Assessment Office also maintains records of properties exempt from real estate tax and administers other special exemptions including Homestead, Senior Homestead, Senior Assessment Freeze, Disabled Veterans, Veterans/Fraternal Organization Assessment Freeze exemptions. The Chief County Assessment Officer is also the Clerk for the Board of Review as well as the equalization authority. The Chief County Assessment Officer correlates the work of the Township Assessors and is responsible for mailing assessment notices to taxpayers and publishing assessment change notices. The County Assessment Office is also responsible for maintaining and updating County cadastral maps and the Parcel Identification Numbering system.
The Chief County Assessment Officer is appointed to a four-year term by the County Board of Champaign County.
Mission Statement: The mission of the County Assessment Office is three-fold. First, to assist the local assessment officials in the county as they discover, list and appraise property for tax purposes. Secondly, the Chief County Assessment Officer ensures that assessment levels are uniform and at the legal assessment level by applying a uniform percentage increase or decrease to all assessments in the jurisdiction. Thirdly, this office seeks to provide the public with information about the tax cycle and its two key components: property assessments and taxing body levies.
