Library patrons can combine the pleasure of thumbing through a magazine with the ease of free online access thanks to a new digital magazine service available to Champaign Public Library cardholders.
The library’s Zinio digital newsstand offers close to 200 popular magazines to view page-by-page on a computer, tablet, or Internet-enabled mobile device. Titles cover a range of interests and include Car & Driver, Consumer Reports, The Economist, Martha Stewart Living, Runner’s World, Us Weekly, and Vibe. Several titles in Spanish are available.
Digital magazines appear just as they do in print, with the advantage of unlimited, anytime access. “You can subscribe to as many magazines as you like,” said Kristina Hoerner, the library’s Adult Services manager. “There are no due dates, and there’s no limit to how many people can use a magazine simultaneously.”
Digital magazines also offer the ability to magnify and print pages, search within a magazine, and link to articles from the table of contents. Some have value-added features such as video or audio content.
Hoerner noted that the library’s print magazines are still popular, but they don’t hold up well with repeated use. And the library keeps only one year of back issues. Older issues go into a Magazine Clearance Sale each January. “You’ll be able to keep digital back issues indefinitely,” she said. “And when a new issue is available, you automatically receive an e-mail notice.”
Champaign patrons can access the service through a link in the library catalog. Patrons need to create two accounts—one to browse the library’s digital collection, and one to use the Zinio magazine reader. Zinio works on both PCs and Macs. An app for reading the magazines is available for many mobile devices, including iPhone, iPad, Android, Kindle Fire, and Blackberry Playbook.
Zinio joined with Recorded Books to offer digital magazines through libraries earlier this year. Some libraries have reported a surge in library card applications inspired by this popular new service.
The Champaign Public Library Friends provided funding for Champaign’s digital magazine collection. For additional information, contact the library at firstname.lastname@example.org or at 217/403-2070.
