For the third time, the Champaign Public Library has been included on Library Journal’s annual list of “star libraries,” this time stepping up to a 4-star rating.
The industry-leading magazine’s LJ Index of Public Library Service analyzed 7,513 libraries, grouped them by budget, and awarded a 3- to 5-star rating to the top-scoring libraries in each group. Star status was given to just 262 libraries, or less than 4% of libraries in the country. Scores were based on data from 2009, looking at four measures of library use per capita: number of checkouts, library visits, program attendance and public Internet use.
Eighteen libraries in Illinois earned star honors. Champaign’s circulation of 33.1 items per capita was the highest of any star library in the state, including those in higher budget categories.
