Champaign Library Mural Artist Peter Sís to Speak and Sign Books
Donna Pittman, Development Director
Champaign Public Library
A series of three murals created by acclaimed illustrator and author Peter Sís has been installed in the children’s area of the Champaign Public Library. Sís will visit the library to discuss the project and sign books during a free event for adults on Wed., Dec.14, from 4 to 5 pm, in Robeson Pavilion Room A & B. The event is open to the public and registration is not required.
Sis’s more than 20 books for children have earned numerous accolades, including three Caldecott Honors and seven New York Review of Books Best Illustrated Book of the Year awards. Previous mural installations include the Washington/Baltimore airport and the New York subway system. Sís’s newest book, The Conference of the Birds, was published this fall by The Penguin Press. An illustrated adaptation of the twelfth century Persian poet Farid Ud-Din Attar’s epic poem, the book is his first for adults.
A committee of library board and community members envisioned the use of artwork created by a children’s illustrator to enhance the children’s area of the library. The murals were created using private funding. Sís says the imagery conveys the idea that books open the world to young readers. Connecting the classic to the present day, familiar faces from children’s literature appear alongside the artist’s own book characters.
The library is located at 200 W. Green St. For more information, contact the Children’s Services department at 217/403-2030 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
