The new Champaign Public Library

Drawing of new library seen from the west

Our beautiful new library stands just north of the old library. Built of brick with limestone and copper accents, it faces Green Street. Learn more about the design, plus who funded and built this wonderful new space. Our project history explains the need for a new library and how the plan developed.

This welcoming, light-filled space will bring many improvements patrons have been asking for. Environmental concerns have shaped the design. Look here for floor plans, too.

Project History

The library outgrew its old home at 505 S. Randolph St. within a few years of its opening in 1978. With that building unsuitable for expansion or reuse, a brand new library was needed.

Architects & Contractors

The new library is designed by Ross Barney Architects in Chicago. Design Principal Carol Ross Barney is a U. of I. graduate.
